Azerbaijani Turks constitute at least one third of the population and speak a Turkish dialect. Even though Azerbaijani Turks are Shia Muslims and have a history of coexisting with ethnic Persians,Azerbaijani Turks inside Iran do not receive recognition of their language rights. It is restricted both in the educational system and in the media. The Iranian authorities also have renamed many Azerbaijani Turkish areas, further restricting the culture.
